Member guide: tap your NFC tag at the gate
Use this when the door does not open with your physical membership tag (fob/card). For phone wallet taps, see member-wallet-tap-troubleshooting.md.
Before you tap
- Membership active — your key shows as active in the member portal.
- Tag linked to you — the portal shows Tag linked with your tag pattern (not “no tag linked”).
- Use the tag, not your phone — for tag entry, hold the fob/card on the reader. Wallet passes are a separate flow (see the phone guide above).
At the reader
- Hold the flat side of your tag against the reader pad.
- Keep it still for 2–3 seconds — do not tap quickly and pull away.
- The reader light should flash (or you hear a beep) when it sees your tag.
- Wait for the gate — do not remove the tag too early.
Reader never flashes or beeps?
| Situation | What to try |

| Other members’ tags work | Try the other side of your tag, hold longer, same spot on the pad. Tag may be damaged or not linked — ask staff to check your tag ID. |
| Your phone wallet works on the same reader | The gate is fine. Your tag may be wrong, demagnetized, or not linked to your account. |
| Nothing works for anyone | Tell staff — reader power, cable, or gate software may need attention. |
Tag vs phone (hybrid gyms)
Many facilities support either a physical tag or Apple/Google Wallet. They are not interchangeable in one tap:
- Tag entry → hold your fob/card on the reader.
- Phone entry → open Wallet / Google Wallet, show your pass, hold your phone (top on iPhone, back on Android).
Using your phone screen against the reader when staff expect a tag (or vice versa) will not open the door.
Registration window (self-service link)
If you are linking a new tag at an unattended reader:
- Tap Start …s window on your dashboard first.
- Within the countdown, tap your tag at the same reader.
- If the window expires with no tag detected, stand at the reader, tap Try again, and tap the tag before zero.
What staff see when it fails

| No flash, no beep | Damaged tag, wrong tap spot, or tag not linked |
| Worked before, not now | Lost tag still on account; replacement not linked yet |
